RecyKleren - Adventures in making panties

Verdorie! Nu is de recykleer-veertiendaagse al voorbij en heb ik geen tijd kunnen maken om er nog eentje te bloggen! Een beetje vijgen na pasen dus, maar ziehier mijn laatste recykleersel. Een onderbroek begot!
Er is sprake van een licht grannypants gehalte, maar ik ben er verdorie kweetniehoe fier op!  En ze zit mij als gegoten.  Dat gaat u zo op mijn woord moeten geloven, want aan-foto's krijgt u deze keer niet. Zo dapper ben ik niet.
Het patroon is gratis en vond ik hier, ik verhoogde de taille met vier centimeter. 
Dat bolletjes-stofje was ooit een rok die ik kreeg van een collega van mijn mama. Het is een mengeling van lycra en katoen, en heerlijk zacht. Ideaal dus voor dit onderbroekexperiment. De randen werkte ik af met elastische bias. Hebt u dat al eens gebruikt? Dat is een plezier jong! En met een driesteek-zigzag ziet het er kei-proffesioneel uit. Experiment geslaagd medunkt!

Aww damn, Recykleer veertiendaagse or Recycle fortnight flew by and I didn't find the time to blog one recyled project! So here I am, late for the party as always, with my latest one. Panties!
There is a little grannypants-vibe going on, but I'm so very proud of it! And it fits like a glove! No modeling pictures this time though, so you'll have to take my word for it. I'm not that brave. 
The pattern is a free download from Zoë's blog. The only alteration I made was adding an inch to the waistline,  I like my panties high waisted. The fabric was an old skirt a colleague of my mother's gave me. It's a lycra/cotton blend and very soft. Ideal for my first adventure in making panties! Edges are finished with fold over elastic. Did you guys ever use FOE? It's awesome! And with a tree-stitch zigzag it looks so professional! Score!

Invasion of the green!

 Yeey, binnenkort is er weer de RecyKleer veertiendaagse! Een inspirerend initiatief van Boomie, lees er hier meer over op haar gezellige blog of kijk hier voor wat Pinspiratie.  Ik kijk er al weer naar uit om al die originele recyKleersels te zien passeren. Om al wat in de stemming te komen placeer ik hier zelf ook nog eens een recykleersel. Twee zelfs! Mijn favoriete manier van zelf maken, voldoening alom!
Onlangs was ik in de kringloopwinkel (toevallig!) en daar hadden ze net een rek lederen jassen uitgestald. De meesten waren aan de lelijke kant, ik zag twee vriendinnen een hilarische carnavaloutfit scoren, maar bij mij borrelde er een idee. Ik kocht deze veel te grote en nogal mottige jas voor een prikje. Mottige foto ook, sorry. Als ik entoesiast ben kan ik moeilijk wachten. Op daglicht voor een betere foto bijvoorbeeld.

Yeey, soon it's RecyKleer Veertiendaagse or Recycle Fortnight again! A very inspiring initiative from Boomie at Boomie's Blog (in Dutch). The blogosphere is brimming with beautiful creations, and although it's very tempting to work with pretty designer fabrics, it can be a great challenge to make something new from something old. Recycling or RecyKleren ( Recycleren = Recycling, Kleren= garments) is good for your wallet, for the environment and for your grey brain cells! It's my favorite way of making garments and, to get you in the mood, I want to show you something I've recycled lately. Two things actually!

Here we go!

Two weeks ago I was at the thriftshop (what a coincidence!) where they just displayed a bunch of rather ugly leather jackets. As I was browsing thru, an idea popped in my head. I bought this big green coat for a small price. Not the best picture, I'm sorry. When I'm excited I'm not the most patient person, so I couldn't wait for daylight to make a better one.

Maar dus, een eerder mottige jas gemaakt van soepel groen leer... En schone knopen. Thuisgekomen dissecteerde ik de jas vakkundig...

So, a rather ugly coat made from supple green leather, with pretty buttons...  When I came home I carefully dissected the coat...

En zo kwam ik in het bezit van redelijk veel soepel groen leer. Eerst had ik dit in gedachten. Toen bedacht ik een lederen kraagje. Ellebooglappen! Een handtas! Mogelijkheden galore! 

Dit werd het eerste.

And that's how I ended up with a lot of leather pieces. At first I had this in mind. Then I thought of a leather collar. Elbow patches! A bag! My head was full of plans. This was the first one I carried out. 

Een simpel bloesje met een lederen kraagje.In het groen, mijn nieuwe liefde! Het past schoon bij mijn haar en het is vrolijker dan al dat grijs en zwart in mijn wintergarderobe.

Maar twee recykleersels dus. Aja want ik had nog genoeg groen leer over!
Een jaar geleden vond ik deze groene cape in de soldenbak van de kringloopwinkel (drie stuks voor twee euro, thah!).
Zuivere scheerwol, met een etiket van Lanvin London, heerlijk zacht en vooral enorm groot. Ik nam hem mee met de idee om als draagbaar tv-dekentje te gebruiken, maar dat bleek niet zo'n strak plan, ik was constant bang om er iets op te morsen. Dus belandde hij al snel op de recyKleerstapel, waar ik hem vorige week weer af plukte om er een tweede fair frakske van te maken.

As I mentionned before, I have two recycled items to show you, so here's the second one.
A year ago I found this big cape in the sales bin at the thriftshop (three items for two euro, thah!). Very soft green wool with a Lanvin London label. I purchased it with the intention to use it as a wearable Tv-blanket, but that didn't turn out to be a good idea as I constantly had a fear to spill something on it. So I added it to my to-recycle stack, from which I retrieved it last week, to make another fair vest.

Nu we toch over favorieten bezig zijn, dit stukje strand is één van mijn favoriete plekjes. Dat is het al jaren, maar nu kom ik er nòg liever. Het Altar is een kunstwerk van Kris Martin ter ere van Jan Hoet en onderdeel van zijn laatste tentoonstelling De Zee. Ik vind het prachtig. Het is als een raam op de zee, en het past zo mooi in de wijdsheid van het strand. Voor de tentoonstelling moet je betalen, maar het mooiste werk (in mijn ogen) kan je gratis bezichtigen op het strand van Oostende, voor het Thermae Palace. Ik weet niet zeker of het er voor altijd blijft staan, maar ik hoop zo hard van wel!

Now that we are talking favorites, this stretch of beach is one of my favorite spots in Belgium since long.  And it got even better now because of this.

The Altar is an artwork made by Kris Martin and is part of the exhibition The Sea (De Zee) a salute of honor to Jan Hoet,  founder of the S.M.A.K. in Ghent (Municipal Museum of Contemporary Art). I truly love it. It's like a window to the sea and fits perfectly in the wideness of the beach. The rest of the exhibition is paying, but the best part of it, in my opinion, is for free: at the beach in Ostend in front of the Thermae Palace Hotel. I'm not sure it will stay there forever, but I hope it does! 

Fair Frakske*!

Haa, tweedehands en de kringloopwinkel, dat ik een fan ben hoef ik u lang niet meer te vertellen! (Vorige zaterdag was trouwens de dag van de kringloopwinkel en dankzij Kelly van 'Ma vie en vert' kon ik meedoen met het repaircafé van Aalst. Superplezant! Het deed me zo veel plezier om mensen te kunnen helpen met het herstellen of pimpen van hun kledij. Instant kringloopvoldoening! Kijk hier voor enkele foto's.)  

Ik koop nu al bijna een jaar lang enkel nog tweedehands kledij en dat bevalt mij prima. Ook mijn zelfmaaksels zijn dikwijls gefabriceerd van stof die ik daar scoor, bijvoorbeeld dit vestje.

De buitenstof is fijn geweven en zacht, er zit wat wol in, maar verder kan ik niet echt detecteren wat het precies is. (Ik weet dat we vroeger op school brandproefjes moesten doen om de samenstelling van stoffen te achterhalen, maar de theorie ben ik uiteraard al lang vergeten. Iemand die weet hoe dat ook al weer in elkaar zat?) In elk geval, het voelt erg fijn aan en de mosterd bruin-geelachtige kleur is helemaal mijn ding!

Aaa, the second hand store! No need to tell you guys I am a big big fan. For almost a year now I solely buy second hand garments and that feels pretty great! The fabrics I use for memade items are often thrift too, like this jacket for instance.

The shell fabric is a soft woolen blend. I don't know the exact composition. (At school we used to melt fabric samples as a test to find out its composition, but I don't really remember how that worked or which conclusion we made in the end. Anyone does?) Anyway, I love the structure and the color of this fabric!

Het patroon komt uit een boek dat ik onlangs aan mijn jarige schoonzusje cadeau deed (zij heeft sinds kort ook de naaimicrobe te pakken!). Het heet "Naaien en stikken" door Tessa Evelegh en is vertaald uit het engels. Het komt voort uit de brits tv show The Great British Sewing Bee en daar was de weergaloze Tilly, waar ik in mijn vorige post al over schreef, één van de kandidaten van. En hop zo dwaal ik af, want wat ik eigenlijk wou zeggen is dat bij het doorbladeren van het boek mijn oog meteen viel op dit vestje. De patronen staan op verkleinde schaal in het boek om uit te vergroten in het copycenter of op centimeterpapier maar je kan ze ook downloaden, dus dat deed ik! Het vestje zit heel simpel in elkaar, dus ik had niet echt een werkbeschrijving nodig.  

Het patroon voorzag geen voering, dus die tekende ik zelf. De paarse voeringstof komt ook van de kringloopwinkel. Een volledig fair frakske* is dit dus!

The pattern is from a book I recently bought as a birthday gift for my sister in law (she caught the sew virus a little while ago!). It's a dutch translation of 'The Great British Sewing Bee' book by Tessa Evelegh. I immediately spotted this jacket and fell in love. The book contains the scaled version of the patterns but you can download them online too, so that's what I did! The construction is really simple, so I did not need the instructions to make it.

I drafted the lining myself, because this wasn’t included in the original pattern. The purple fabric is a second hand store buy too, so this a very fair and ecofriendly garment!

Omdat de gele stof maar een lapje van 75 cm was, kwam er wel wat pas en meetwerk bij kijken om het hele vestje er uit te persen. Ik moest de mouwen in twee delen knippen anders paste het niet. Om die naad wat te verdoezelen zette ik er een geschulpt siersteekje op.

The yellow piece of fabric was only 75 cm long, so I had a hard time squeezing all pattern pieces out of it. I had to cut the sleeves in two. To make it look intentional, I made a scalloped embroidery stitch on the seam.

 

Als afsluiter wil ik jullie graag nog iets vertelen over de naaiplanner van 'verbeelding.org'. Die kwam ik voorbije zomer toevallig tegen bij mijn omzwervingen op het www. Superhandig ding, ik heb hem direct gedownload en in gebruik genomen. Ik vond op de zolder van de school waar ik werk (het blijkt daar echt een schatkamer!) een ringmapje op A5 formaat, ideaal om in mijn sjakosj te zwieren. Ikzelf vul de blaadjes pas volledig in nadat ik iets gemaakt heb, om te onthouden wat ik verandere aan een patroon of welk soort stof ik gebruikt heb en hoeveel. Er is plaats voor een schets van je maaksel, stofstaaltjes,... Het vakje 'bezint eer ge begint' vind ik ook heel nuttig en het is gewoon ook plezant om er in te bladeren en te zien wat je zoal gemaakt hebt en wat er nog op je planning staat. 

Dus: Ga heen en dowload, ge zult er geen spijt van krijgen!

Finally I want to tell you something about my sew-organizer. I found it at 'verbeelding.org'. So neat, I had to print it out and use it immediately! It's in dutch, so sorry, but I guess it's very easy to it make it yourself. I was like why didn't I think of that?! Basically it's an organizer for planning your hand made garments, write down how much fabric you need, make a little sketch, attach fabric samples,... The "think before you act" , for example, is a very handy feature in my book! And it's fun to flip through the pages and see what you already made or planning to make!

De enige aanpassing die ik maakte: zakken! * The only alteration I made: pockets!

 

Typisch, ik begon ergens half augustus aan deze June en vervolgens bleef ze wekenlang op mijn paspop hangen. Het kwam er niet van om ze af te werken door de voorbereidingen van de trouw en doordat ik wat opzag tegen het installeren van het beleg. Het werkt op een inventieve wijze de arm- en halsopening af, maar toen ik de uitleg vooraf eens las verstond ik daar geen knijt van. (Zoals vaak wanneer ik een instructie vooraf doorlees. Ik vergeet steeds dat het altijd veel duidelijker wordt wanneer je er effectief aan bezig bent. Herkennen jullie dat?) Toen brak de laatste dag van de vakantie aan en plots moest en zou ik ze afwerken en de volgende dag aandoen. De belegtruuk bleek doodsimpel en een uurtje later was ze klaar. Vlam! Alweer een favoriet uit La Maison Victor!
Ik kocht intussen ook de laatse editie, onder andere voor de Chloë-jas (zooo schoon), maar daar kan ik jammer genoeg nog niet aan beginnen. Toen ik vorig weekend het patroon wou uittekenen bleek het patronenboekje veel te diep verlijmd in het tijdschrift. Ik kon het er dus onmogelijk uithalen zonder de bladen te beschadigen. Bummer! Ik heb er foto's van gemaakt en gemaild naar LMV, in de hoop op een nieuw exemplaar!

I started making this dress somewhere half august, but then left it hanging at my mannequin as an UFO for the rest of the month. Planning our wedding took all of my time and I didn't understand the instructions for installing the facing before starting the project (As always when I read a tutorial beforehand. I tend to forget that when I actually have the project in my hands, making it, I understand things much better. Do you guys now what I mean?). Anyway, the last day of vacation arrived and suddenly I felt the urge to finish it and wear it the next day. Installing the facing turned out to be a piece of cake and an hour later I did the final ironing. Bam! Another favorite piece from La Maison Victor magazine!
I recently purchased the latest issue including the Chloë coat-pattern (soooo pretty) but ended up a little disappointed. When I tried to take out the pattern booklet, I discovered it was glued all crooked into the magazine, making it impossible to take it out without tearing it to pieces. Bummer! I took pictures of it and e-mailed them to the costumers service hoping to get a new copy soon! 

Voor de stofkeuze liet ik me inspireren door deze foto. Al sinds Tilly's boek uitkwam stond ik te popelen om het aan te schaffen. Haar blog is erg inspirerend en haar stijl en vormgeving zijn fris en mooi. Maar mijn koopverbod op patronen geldt nog steeds, dus hield ik me braafjes in. Maar toen ik het zag liggen bij Standaard boekhandel stond ik er plots mee aan de kassa... Echter nog geen spijt gehad van mijn zwak moment, 't is een aanwinst én een aanrader. Ik zal er hier nog wel eens over vertellen.  Maar deze jurk was er dus al vòòr het boek. Liefde voor de zwart-witte hartjes!

Since the launch of Tilly's book I couldn't wait to lay my hands on it. Her blog is very inspiring and her style refreshing and pretty, in my opinion. But my prohibition on buying new patterns still counts, so I held my horses. Until the day I found it at my local book shop, in Dutch. And suddenly I was at the check-out. I haven't had any regrets since that weak moment, it's a wonderful addition to my sewing book collection and I would really recommend it to all of you. I'll write more about it soon! Anyway, the dress came before the book, I love the black and white hearts!
