Aah la douce France! Bij het inpakken van mijn valies, een paar dagen voor ons tripje naar de franse zon, kwam ik tot de vaststelling dat ik eigenlijk maar twee passende shorts meer had (die vervloekte extra kilo's toch!). In de kringloopwinkel vond ik niet direct mijn ding, maar wel een lap mooie lichtblauwe katoen. Tegen een deadline naaien, het is eigenlijk niet aan mij besteed, maar ik moest en zou nog er nog een shortje mee in elkaar flansen voor we vertrokken!

Aaah la douce France! A few days before we left for our trip I realized I only had two shorts in my closet that fit well (Aaah, damn you, extra weight!). I didn't find what I was looking for in our local second hand store, but I bought a piece of light blue cotton instead.  Sewing against a deadline, normally it isn't for me, but I desperately wanted to make shorts from it before we left.

 

Ik had een model in mijn hoofd à la Chataigne van Deer and Doe, maar het patroontje bestellen was niet echt een optie. Ik heb al zoveel patronen liggen (ik kreeg onlangs nog drie oude jaargangen van de Knip van een vriendin die bij de bibliotheek werkt) en bovendien zou het patroontje nooit op tijd bij mij geraken. Dus zocht ik een eenvoudig broekpatroon in die stapel Knip's, gebruikte ik deze tutorial voor de geschulpte zoom, en deze voor een gulp-sluiting.  De rits en de knoopjes kocht ik ooit al eens eerder in de kringloopwinkel, dus dit is een volledig gerecykleerd geval!

I had the Chataigne shorts from Deer and Doe in my mind, but ordering the pattern wasn't quite an option. I already own so much patterns (I recently got a pile of old Knipmodes from a friend who works at the library) and besides, I would've never received it in time. So I searched for a simple pants pattern in the pile of Knipmodes, used this tutorial for the scalloped hem, and this one for the zipper fly (it's in Dutch, but the pictures are very clear!). I already had the zipper and the buttons in my stash from a previous visit to the thrift shop, so these are completely recycled shorts!

 

Het snelsnel in elkaar flansen ging uiteindelijk niet zò snel, want die geschulpte rand was nog niet zo evident. Ik maakte mijn boogjes te scherp waardoor het niet meeviel om de boel netjes om te keren. Maar uiteindelijk werd het resultaat aanvaardbaar, en was hij net op tijd klaar om de volgende dag mee te vertrekken.

It wasn't quite a fast make because of the scalloped hem. I made the angles way to sharp, which made it hard to flip them right side out and shape them neatly. But eventually the result became acceptable, and I finished them just in time for our departure the next day.

Avenue jumpsuit

Hallo daar, weer al even geleden! De eerste maand van mijn vakantie is voorbij gevlogen! De tijd gaat snel als ge u amuseert met de Gentse feesten, tripjes naar de zee, een toffe reis naar zuid Frankrijk en naaien natuurlijk!

Hi folks, long time no see! The first month of my vacation flew by! I had a lot of fun going to the 'Gentse Feesten', making seaside road trips, spending a lovely time in the south of France and sewing of course!

Dit is de Avenue jumpsuit van La Maison Victor, het derde springpak dat ik maakte, het tweede dat draagbaar is (Nope, die andere poging waar ik hier al over vertelde is niet goed afgelopen. Pattatenzak it is. *spijtig). Maar deze heeft al mijn frustraties doen vergeten! Wat een gemak om te maken én te dragen! Het was de eerste keer dat ik zelf een bias lint maakte, ik had daar wat zweetpollekes voor, maar het ging verassend goed.

This is the Avenue jumpsuit from the La Maison Victor magazine. It's the third jumpsuit I made and the second one that's wearable (Nope, the one I talked about here didn't turn out well. At all. Hefty bag it is *sad face). But this one made up for all the frustrations! It was easy peasy to make, and I love wearing it!  I made my first bias tape for this one, which caused a bit of stress, but it worked like a charm.

Het was ook de eerste keer dat ik iets maakte uit La Maison Victor, en het zal niet de laatste keer zijn. Super gemakkelijk om het patroon terug te vinden op het patroonblad dankzij de kleine schemaatjes en de instructies waren erg duidelijk. Ik had op een mum van tijd die polo sluiting gemaakt! Ik gebruikte drukknopen in plaats van gewone. Kwestie van er snel uit en weer in te geraken, altijd handig bij dringende toiletbezoeken! 

De stof is een blauwachtig paarse katoen en komt van bij De Strik in Gent. Eigenlijk vraagt het model eerder een meer soepele stof, maar deze had ik in mijn voorraad en ik hou van katoen op mijn vel in de zomer.

Another first timer: I had never used a pattern from La Maison Victor before and, I must say, it was a pleasure. So easy to find the pattern on the sheet thanks to the little diagrams and the instructions where all very clear. I made that button placket in no time! I chose to use snaps instead of plain buttons for fast and easy on-off maneuvers. Comes in handy for urgent visits to the toilet! The fabric is a bluish purple soft cotton lawn I purchased at De Strik in Ghent a few months ago. The pattern requires a more supple fabric, but since I already had this one in my stash, I made it work. I like the feel of cotton on my skin, in my book it's ideal for summer garments!

Niet slecht bezig al zeg ik het zelf! Ook nu de solden bezig zijn kan ik me best inhouden om niets te kopen van grote ketens, enkel eco, fair of tweedehands. Beter dan ik ooit verwacht had zelfs. Waar ik vroeger op de eerste dag van de solden al in de Veldstraat stond, krijg ik nu de kriebels als ik in de tweede week door de winkelstraten moet om op mijn bestemming te geraken. Van de drukte alleen al, maar ook van hoe sommige mensen omgaan met kledij in die winkels. Alles wordt op een hoop of zelfs op de grond gegooid, niets lijkt nog waardevol, want "Ahja want het is goedkoop nu!". Dat elk van die kledingstukken gemaakt zijn door mensen wiens maandloon bijna even laag is als de prijs van het zoveelste T shirt op de stapel blijkt ver van hun bed. Maar hey! Ik wil niemand met de vinger wijzen (dat moet hier nu ook weer geen preek worden hé) want ik dacht daar vroeger zelf ook nooit bij na. Maar ik hoop wel, door dit soort blogpostjes, mijn steentje bij te dragen aan het sensibiliseren van dit onderwerp! Dus, bedankt voor uw aandacht, lieve lezers! ^_^

Not bad, if I may say so myself! Even now during the sales I can

keep my pledge not to buy anything from the big fashion chains and to only purchase eco, fair or second hand items. While before I used to go out shopping on the very first day of sales, I now really dislike walking in the shopping streets even in the second week! Not just because it's so crowded, but because of how people behave sometimes. Everything lies around in big piles or have even been thrown onto the floor, and nothing seems valuable anymore because "It's sales!". Few people seem to realize these clothes are made by people whose monthly wage is almost as low as the price of one of these T shirts on the pile. But hey! I don't want to blame anybody (and I certainly don't want to harp on about this), because I used to not think about that too! But I hope, through these blogposts, I can help to make people aware of this subject! So, thank you all for your attention, dear readers! ^_^

Datura #2 Summertime!

Hallo iedereen! 

Haaa, het weer beseft het duidelijk nog niet, maar de zomer is begonnen! 

Hi everyone!

Haaa, the weather obviously doesn't realized it yet (it's raining cat's and dogs here in Belgium), but summer has begun!

 

Intussen rolde dit zomerse Daturaatje van onder mijn machien. Ik verklaarde al eerder mijn liefde voor dit patroon, en nu ik het in de vingers heb is het een "gepeist werk", zoals wij dat hier noemen. Op een goede twee uur tijd hing dit fleurige geval om mijn lijf. Geen kraag of puntjes aan de halslijn, dat vond ik bij dit drukke stofje niet nodig. 

De stof komt van bij "De Strik" in Gent en de schattige vintage knoopjes kreeg ik cadeau van mijn stagaire. Zij naait zelf ook, haar mama had vroeger een naaiwinkeltje en heeft nu nog hele schuiven vol met dit soort pareltjes! Urén zou ik daarin kunnen rondsnuisteren!

Meanwhile, I made this summery Datura. I already declared my love for this pattern, and now that I mastered it, it's a really fast project! I made this simple one in a little more than two hours. No collar or pointy neck details though, I felt no need for it with this bolt fabric.  I bought it at one of my favorite fabric stores in Ghent, "De strik". Translated that's "The bow" ^_^ The cute vintage buttons where a gift from my intern. She sews too, her mom used to have a fabric store, and she still has drawers full of little gems like these! Oooh how I'd like to browse in those!
